Editors Notes: Fall & Winter 2003 Meetings
No registration required and a Free Lunch. Go figure! We would like to see you all at our Fall and Winter meetings this year at the Embassy Suites North, Columbus, Ohio. Networking with your colleagues from throughout the state is a great way to learn and share. This is your organization and we need your presence, your participation and your perspiration. Let's keep it happening! Bring a colleague from a school that is not currently a member of the OBA. Show them what we are about. It is important that each of you make sure that our Treasurer, Deb Jones, has a complete and accurate e-mail address so that you will be able to receive the Paper Trails Newsletter and other important notices that the OBA may have.

Spring Meeting 2003!

Look Out Dayton; Here Come the Bursars!!

OBA Spring Conference April 14-16, 2003 - pdf brochure

at Wright State University

Mark your calendars now and plan to attend our upcoming Spring Conference as Dayton and the World celebrate 100 years of powered flight. The conference will be hosted in Wright State University's Student Union with overnight accommodations available directly across from the university.

As we close out the old year and ring in the new, it's appropriate for us to pause and reflect on what we did well and what can be improved. As leaders, we are constantly challenged to deal with change. Sometimes we are able to anticipate change but many times we cannot. We are also called upon frequently to assume multiple roles in the day-to-day conduct of our business. As leaders, we need to prepare ourselves to meet both the expected and unexpected challenges. How do we adapt to our changing business environment as we transition from providing personal service to electronic self-service? How can we reallocate resources to provide a more efficient, productive service? And how can we keep both our staffs and ourselves motivated during this constant state of flux?

The goal of this year's conference is to provide you with some answers to these and other questions as we focus our theme on leadership and innovation. Our conference will lead off with keynote speaker Patti Holmes, addressing the topic, "The Spirit of Leadership."

Keynote Speaker

Patti Holmes

"The Spirit of Leadership"

As a professional speaker and organizational consultant, Patti specializes in skills training and problem solving in areas of motivation, leadership, communication, team building, strategic planning and organizational change. Patti's presentations and style include a wealth of practical information that is delivered with warmth, enthusiasm and humor. While sharing her message with hundreds of audiences both nationally and internationally, Patti's clients include numerous Fortune 500 corporations as well as small privately owned businesses.
Patti will be celebrating her 15th anniversary as president of her own human resource consulting firm in 2003.

Other conference highlights include:

  • What you need to know to protect your institution from fraud and security breaches as e-commerce grows.
  • College Tax Credits/Incentives and College Savings Plans.
  • Business to Consumer Electronic Bill Presentment and Payment.
  • How to grow your campus e-commerce initiatives by partnering with your Campus One Card program.
  • ACH and electronic check initiatives.
  • Peer panel assessment on web based fee payments-what worked well and what went wrong.

Keynote Speaker

The Honorable
Sally L. Stroup

Asst Secretary for Postsecondary Education

Sally L. Stroup was sworn in as assistant secretary for postsecondary education on March 20, 2002. As assistant secretary, she serves as the principal adviser to U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige on all matters related to postsecondary education. In this capacity, Stroup coordinates department programs relating to financial assistance for eligible students enrolled in higher education institutions and recommends policies to recruit and prepare disadvantaged students to enroll and complete postsecondary education programs.

Of course we will have our usual roundtable discussions along with lots of opportunities to network with peers and associate members/vendors. OBA will again host a hospitality suite on Monday and Tuesday nights and for those golfers in the group, we will have our traditional golf outing on Monday, April 14 at Beavercreek Golf Club approximately 3 miles from campus.

Watch for more details in the upcoming registration materials that will be mailed out at the end of January. I'm excited about our conference as we turn the page on 2002 and look forward to a year of challenge and opportunity. Together, let's prepare ourselves as leaders to successfully accomplish the challenges of tomorrow!

Steve Sherbet
President-Elect
